How to connect to the WSUS database using SQL tools

On ocassion you may need to connect to the WSUS database.  There have been times where you run into consistency errors that need to be corrected using the SQL Management Studio.  Not a big deal if your database resides on a full blown SQL Server instance.  If you're using the Windows Internal database installation, its not quite as straightforward.

Here's how to connect:

  1. Install SQL Management Studio Express (SQL MSE) on the server hosting the WSUS database.
  2. Open the SQL Management Studio Express.  If this is the first time you've opened SQL MSE, you will be prompted to enter a server name and select an authentication method.
  3. In the server name box, type \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query.
  4. Set the authentication to Windows Authentication.
  5. Press Connect.

No straightforward, but not complicated either.  If you plan on making any changes, now would be a great time to back it up.
